Guidelines for Updating the IH887 Electronic Textbook
This year IH887 will update an electronic textbook that will be available on-line. In the past students have prepared presentations and papers for each session on current situation and advances in maternal and child health. This year we will use the papers developed last year as a starting point for the creation of our new electronic textbook. Our hope is that the electronic textbook will be the most consise and up-to-date resource available on maternal and child health. We plan that each year our students will up-date and revise these papers. We suggest that you start by reviewing the paper and presentation in the technical area that you have been assigned. Then review the new format for the paper. There will be some information you will have to re-organize so that you can put it into the new format. If you find important areas or information that were not addressed in last years paper, you can add it to your paper. You should spend some time looking for information that has changed or for any new developments that have occurred since the last paper was written.

You must follow the format for the electronic textbook that is presented below.

Place a Title Page with authors names and date of revision. Then follow the following format:

1. Vignette: start each topic with a one paragraph vignette that illustrates how an individual or community experiences the public health issue(s) in your technical area.

2. Introduction to your technical area
2.1 Scope of the problem/global statistics
2.2 Summary of past developments
2.3 Progress in addressing this technical area

3. Epidemiology
3.1 Etiology
3.2 Transmission
3.3 Pathophysiology- description of the way that the diseases causes illness
3.4 Clinical presentation (signs and symptoms)
3.5 Case management/treatment
3.6 Prevention

4. Program management
4.1 Program strategies
4.2 Technical tools/issues
4.3 Management issues
4.4 Evaluation and monitoring of program- include commonly used indicators

5. New Developments and Controversies (include any emerging technologies or strategies for addressing this technical area. Identify any controversial issues related to this topic.

6.0 Bibliography and Resources

The paper should be between 4-6 pages. Feel free to use materials from Newsletters, electronic discussion groups, and newspapers as well as other on-line resources.
Please acknowledge all information both from the internet and from print publications. Hyperlinks to information are strongly desired.

1. Each paper will become part of the IH887 electronic textbook and will be posted on the Website. After the course is over the electronic textbook will be available on the website for anybody around the world to use.

2. Please e-mail the file to all of your class mates and to the faculty members by noon on the Friday before your session. This will give everyone time to read your materials before class and to prepare the questions that have been asked. Use the Course-Info communications facility to do this.

3. For citing references (including text and websites), please use the Harvard name date method of citation NOT the Vancouver style of numbers in text. This will facilitate placing the report on the Web. If you have references which you do not cite, but which would be useful resources please attach them as a bibliography.

4. Special formating- please use word 6.0 and a 11 pt. Times Roman font. Do not number paragraphs. Single space. Bold all standard headings. Use small bullets only.
