Susan D. Foster joined the Department of International Health in October 1998 as Professor of international health. She was previously a Senior Lecturer in Health Economics at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, doing research primarily on the economics of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis. She was also the LSHTM's Distance Learning Coordinator, responsible for coordinating the development of new Master's courses by distance learning (for more info on those, see www.lon.ac.uk/external). She got her PhD from the University of London; her thesis was entitled "The socioeconomic impact of HIV/AIDS on Monze District, Zambia."
Before she joined the LSHTM she worked for 4 years with the WHO's Action programme on essential drugs (DAP) and for 6 years with the World Bank's Population, Health and Nutrition Department, where she was a project officer. She was a Peace Corps volunteer (TEFL) in Zaire / Congo, and in Cameroon. She has lived and worked in a number of African countries, including Zambia, Uganda, Mali, Niger, and visited Indonesia and Malaysia briefly. She lived in Brazil for a few months as a young exchange student. A long time ago. She likes cooking, eating, cycling, kayaking and cross country skiing.
