Below you will find a HUGE list of hundreds of (mostly) health-related websites. This was compiled by John Eyers, a librarian at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine -- thank you, John! It includes a lot of very useful links to the major journals, job sites, government organizations, and how to search the web. It is oriented towards sites and information on the UK. Just page down quickly to get an idea of what is there. I have put two stars ** by sites I know or believe will be particularly useful to you on this course. From time to time I will list additional resources here such as books, articles, or web sites of interest. Students are also invited to contribute to this resource list -- let me know if you want to add something.
Searching tips: I like to use two main search engines:
1. www.dogpile.com brings up the first 10 hits from about 14 different search engines. It is interesting that the different search engines bring up different results -- they work in different ways.
2. www.google.com is really good for unpublished documents -- government papers, news releases and other documents.
3. Others swear by Northern Light -- www.northernlight.com. Try it and see.
To get full-text documents on-line you have two options: OVID and Lexis-Nexis. These can be reached through the BU websites:
1. For Ovid, go to BU Medical Libary www.bumc.bu.edu,, Alumni medical library, then electronic resources, then BU Medline Plus, then full text journals, then Ovid.
2. for Lexis Nexis, go to BU Library www.bu.edu, then resources, then libraries, then Mugar, then "electronic journals", then "L", then Lexis-Nexis. Choose your option within Lexis Nexis.
For news items you can search on the US newspapers but most of them charge you for even reading the archives. Also, most of them list ONLY the items that were written by their own staff -- NOT newswire feeds or more general articles. Exceptions to the policy of charging are the PBS site www.pbs.org and the National Public Radio www.npr.org, and www.cnn.com. The British papers do not charge either -- www.theguardian.co.uk, www.sunday-times.co.uk, are a few. And there is always the excellent and comprehensive good old BBC -- www.bbc.co.uk .
